CHILD-CARE AND SAFETY

HIV/AIDS, poverty and conflict threaten the safety and survival of millions of children in Uganda today. These children feel they have lost all hope as they continue to face daily challenges related to physical, medical and educational needs. The majority of these orphans survive on streets and others are homeless.

As HIV/AIDS take the lives of mothers and fathers in Uganda, hundreds of children continue to lose the primary source of their support, guidance, and unconditional love. As family members become ill, vital resources are depleted and children themselves are at risk of HIV-infections.

The number of children in Uganda orphaned by any cause, including famine, disease, conflict and HIV/AIDS, is over 2.3 millions. This is an orphan crisis.

Most of these children continue to live with a surviving parent or their extended family members. Many of these families are living in poverty and are struggling to provide.

The children need to be fed, protected from neglect, abuse, and deprivation of their basic needs. These vulnerable children require extra monitoring and support to ensure their wellbeing. They require consistent care, access to health services, good nutrition, education, and interaction with local community life, no matter where they live.

FOLM works to strengthen the capacity of families and communities to care for the orphans and vulnerable children since extended family members and other caregivers in the community who are willing to take in children often lack the resources to do so.

FOLM addresses this issue by providing households with support to meet the material, educational and emotional needs of the children. These local solutions do help ensure that every child has a family while also protecting children from mistreatment or abuse. When caregivers are strengthened, fewer children are neglected and abandoned.

FOLM has a deep commitment to serving the poor, the orphans and vulnerable children in communities. We assist all children with serious hardships such as those living in extreme poverty, facing malnutrition, and those whose education is collapsing.

When you support the education of orphans and vulnerable children you give them excitement and a hope. They feel all good and they can start to feel like any child in the community.

Supporting the orphans and vulnerable children in schools is at the heart of FOLM. FOLM is working to improve the education of the orphans and vulnerable children in communities ravaged by poverty, hunger and wars.  We want to see no child left behind.
